– EN Fashion – Zac Posen and Anna Sui will design costumes for the New York City Ballet (NYCB)’s annual Fall Fashion Gala.
The prestigious dance company will reprise its annual Fall Fashion Gala on 26 September (19), and has invited fashion designers to create costumes for new works that will premiere that evening.
The event has been annually conceptualised by Sarah Jessica Parker since it began in 2012, and the Sex and the City star acts as a matchmaker between choreographers and designers. City Ballet’s costume director Marc Happel then facilitates the designers’ visions, and adapts their ideas to suit the ballet dancer and the scale of the performance on stage.
Posen has been paired with NYCB’s principal dancer and choreographer Lauren Lovette, and her yet-to-be-titled ballet will accompany Tan Dun’s score, Fire Ritual, composed for solo violin and orchestra.
Sui will team with Edwaard Liang, artistic director for the BalletMet and a former dancer with NYCB as well as the Nederlands Dans Theater. The work will be set to a new composition for solo violin and orchestra, devised by Oliver Davis.
“For many years, I’ve been pushing for a New York-centric Fall Fashion Gala. This year with Anna and Zac, I think it’s a really nice moment for New York designers,” Happel said to WWD. “What I’ve really learned over the years is how to talk to fashion designers in a way that helps them understand our world and how they can bring their designs into it, in a way that works for the ballet but still has their unique fingerprint.”
Jonathan Stafford, the new Ballet Master in Chief, said he intends to keep the “highly successful” annual gala going as it brings excitement into the theatre.
In the last seven years, the gala has seen collaborations with designers including Valentino, Thom Browne, Virgil Abloh, and Dries van Noten.
